The island is named after explorer George Vancouver's friend James Vashon. The island is connected to the mainland only by the ferry system. There are regular ferries coming from Fauntleroy to Vashon heights, from Vashon heights to Southworth, and from Tahlequah on the island's southern tip to Pt. Defiance in Tacoma, as well as seasonal passenger only ferries from Downtown Seattle to Vashon Heights
