Hampstead is a district of London in the London Borough of Camden. Its name means 'Homestead'. Hampstead Wells became popular as a spa town during the 18th Century, but later it declined following competition from other spas. The town was developed during the late Victorian era with many luxurious houses, and the Northern Line was built. Today Hampstead is very affluent with a high population of millionaires, good transport links and houses regularly being sold for over £1m. Hampstead Heath, once a popular tourist attractions is still one of London's largest ancient parklands.
