Southwark, also known as 'The Borough' started out on the south side of the London Bridge which connnected it to the Roman Capital of Londinium. Southwark has played a role defending the capital from the southern side and was flattened by the Normans in an unsuccessful attempt to attack London.
It is also known as The Borough (invented to distinguish it from The City) and is served by tube stations using both names. Normally, the more historic Borough area is to the southeast around Borough Market and tube station, while Southwark normally refers to "the area on the south side of the Thames". It has a cathedral and has sometimes applied for city status. It became urbanised at an early stage, and now is home to London Bridge railway terminal, the Tate Modern gallery and the reconstructed Globe Theatre. The London Borough of Southwark also covers Peckham, Camberwell and Bermondsey.
