The Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham is one of four metropolitan boroughs in South Yorkshire, bordering Sheffield to the west, Barnsley to the north and Doncaster to the east. To the south is Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
The borough is named for its principal settlement, Rotherham, but also includes numerous other outlying towns, including Swinton, Mexborough, Rawmarsh, Aston, Kiveton Park, Wales, Todwick, Treeton, Catcliffe, Brinsworth, Thurscroft, Dinnington and Maltby. The borough had a population of 248,175 as at the 2001 Census.
