park, forest
A very large coniferous plantation owned by Coillte. The woodland mainly consists of Sitka Spruce and Lodgepole Pine of various ages. Some areas have recently been clear-felled (May 2008). The Western Way Hiking Trail passes through the Forest on good quality forestry roads, as well as one section of boardwalk across blanket bog.
The Forest is named is named after a now abandoned lodge in the south of the site. Despite the largely coniferous element, the forest contains a variety of wildlife (e.g. Badgers, Pine Martin, Crossbills, Siskin and Redpoll).
