park, forest
Formerly the estate of the Dawson family who had the title "Earl of Dartrey", it is currently managed by Coillte as a commercial forest. The Dartrey (Dairtre) Kingdom was a wider area of the region which once belonged to the McMahon's. The name is derived from The Dartraige, said to tranlate as "the calf people", who were an early Celtic tribe that dwelt in and around the general north Roscommon, east Sligo, west Leitrim and also southern Co. Monaghan.
