my family acquired the property in 1952 before the LIE with extensive stables (1/2 mile race track) bordered originally by Spring Hill (Phipps) and Cross Roads (WR Grace). Mrs. Austin was Madeliane Horn Jones whose father founder of J&L steel mills in Pittsburgh. The current main house was built in 1938. Prior she and her first husband West occupied a much larger mansion. She is noted for her stakes winner race horses and kennels [CH Nornay Saddler]. in the early 1960s the stable buildings burned to the ground. All the out buildings remain among the "new" Old Westbury sub divisions. A grand place to grow up as the last years of the extraordinary properties were sold off to developers and the intrusion of the LIE.

I am the Austin's niece and spent every summer at Catawba Farm during my teenage years. I had wonderful summers there. Clara Boyer, Charlotte, NC
