Spring Hill, designed by John Russell Pope, was built for Wall Street stock broker, William L. Stow. In 1906, the 160+ acre estate was purchased by Henry Carnegie Phipps. The house was demolished following the death of Phipps wife, in 1971 (taxes were costing the family 70K a year for the vacant house). In 2004, the estate was sold with plans for a subdivision by Kean Development.

  • Just found your site. Our home was the former Austin estate [about 52 acres]which was boardered by Ogden Phipps and W.R. Grace/Corey. As a young lad in early 1950's, I would ride my bike on Garvan and Phipps properties to Guest and Whitney. Our home and cottages on Pine Tress Lane [original driveway] still stand. We had a 1/4 mile race track and stable for 50 horses which went up in flames in 60's. Thanks so much. Bernard Lawson
  • Thank you for your great site ! I was shocked to see a huge tract of land in this area, found a photo of the original gate on Google Earth on Red Ground road. Also there is a photo of the Red Brick house(not sure whose it is ) and I hope this land will NOT be subdivided, maybe the state can jump in and buy the land for a heritage site /park. I grew up in Roslyn Estates in the 70s and 80s so I was so surprised to see a farm like setting like this still intact.I went to class at nearby N.Y. Tech college and Post college but never went driving on Red Ground Road and Hasting. Wish I had.Keep up the great work. Happy Holidays to all. cheers, Eliot Greenberg
