Mountain range in central Asia, length 800 km/500 mi, greatest height Tirich Mir, 7,690 m/25,239 ft, in Pakistan. The narrow Khyber Pass (53 km/33 mi long) connects Pakistan with Afghanistan. A mountain pass of great strategic and commercial value in the Hindu Kush on the border between northern Pakistan and western Afghanistan. The present road was built by the British in the Afghan Wars (1838–42 and 1878–80).
