Independence Marsh is an 18-acre mitigation wetland, completed in 1993 to replace wetlands lost in the expansion of the Pittsburgh International Airport.

This 78-acre property, formerly the Maslek Farm, was deeded to the Beaver County Conservation District in October 1994 to be operated as an environmental study area.

The Marsh’s two shallow ponds are separated by an archaeological site containing evidence of a Native American campsite along the banks of Raccoon Creek. A 1.5-acre walking trail encompasses the ponds, passing by a deeply wooded hillside, following the path of old PA Route 151. The Marsh also features a public canoe launch at Mile 9 of the 25-mile Raccoon Creek Canoe Trail.

Independence Marsh is open during daylight hours and is easily accessible from PA Route 60, the Beaver Valley Expressway, Hopewell Exit 9. Follow signs for Beaver County Conservation District Environmental Center.
