Moon Township in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, was founded in December 1788. It is the first township established in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
The Township has a current population of over 22,00 residents and has a strong and diverse economy. It is unknown how it got it's name, but some speculate that it was from the Crescent shaped curve of the Ohio River which has always served as part of the township's border.
The township is governed under the Pa Second Class Township Code. There are 5 supervisors, elected at-large, that serve 6 year over-lapping terms. The supervisors are responsible for municipal policy decisions. The Township Manager is in charge of the day to day operations of of the township, specifically, implementing the board's policies. Gregory G. Smith is the current Township Manager, and has worked for Moon Township since early 1982. Mr. Smith is in charge of all personnel and manages the annual budget adopted by the supervisors.He is also the current President of the Association of Pennsylvania Municipal Managers
The current general fund budget for Moon Township is about $12,000,000.00. It has one of the lowest tax rates in Allegheny County.
Moon Township is the home of Robert Morris University, which has a very strong communications school, business school and is growing rapidly. It is also the home of several military installations, specifically the Air force's 911th Air Wing, the U S Army's 99th Regional Readiness Command and the Pennsylvania Air National Guard's 171st Air Refueling Base.
The township changed dramatically when the Greater Pittsburgh Airport's new terminal opened in 1952. What was once a rural area grew into a vibrant support community for the airport. That growth continues, but when a new airport terminal was opened in 1992 in a neighboring municipality, the township's economy began to become more diversified, with corporate headquarters moving into the community. currently, moon Township is the HQ for Fed Ex Ground, Glaxo Smith Klines, Consumer Division, Eaton's Cutler Hammer, the US HQ for Nova Chemical, Lender's Services, Michael Baker Inc.and many more.
