This is an interstate "TIGER RESERVE" between Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Northern section area (257.26 sq. km) was declared as Pench National Park vide Government of Maharashtra (GOM) Notification No. PGS.1375/121758/F-5 Dated 13/12/1975. Further as per Final Notification issued by GOM vide its no. WLP/10-2000/CR-192/F-1 Dated 21/12/2000 an area of 255.12 sq. kms. was declared as National Park.

This National Park was declared as 25th Tiger Reserve of India by GOI in the "Silver Jubilee" year of "Project Tiger".

This Tiger Reserve was awarded the WWF-PATA TIGER CONSERVATION AWARD" for extra-ordinary conservation efforts by the then Park Managers and its Staff in the year 2002. This is the land of Rudiyard Kipling's "Mowgli".
