Ousteri Lake "has been recognized as one of the important wetlands of Asia by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)" and is the "most important freshwater lake in the Pondicherry region". The structure of the lake is complex, consisting of water, wetland/marsh and mudflats.
