This is the entrance gate to the Tongariro National Park. Go through the gate and continue down to the stream. Cross the stream and continue along the road. A little farther along the road the piers of the old railway bridge can be seen. Continue along the new track till you reach the level railway crossing. Cross the tracks and continue along the new track to the northern end of the narrow, "Just in Time" Taonui cutting. The coach road veers to the right in a big loop and comes back under the Taonui Viaduct and continues down to the stream. You can go through the cutting and emerge at the end of the Taonui Viaduct. Go down the side road from the viaduct end and get back on the coach road again.
Cross the stream and continue up the other side, under the viaduct again and up to the southern end of the viaduct. Follow the road around the side of the hill till you reach the top of the big Taonui railway cutting (1987). Scramble down the right edge of the cutting till you reach railway track level.
Cross the tracks then climb up the right hand edge of the opposite side and at the top you are back on the Ohakune Coach Road again.
Start walking, this is the most interesting section of the coach road.
Enjoy.
