 park, zoo

One of the two zoos in Berlin, Germany. It is located in Friedrichsfelde, on the former grounds of Friedrichsfelde Palace, which is situated within the zoo. At 160 hectares it is Europe's largest zoological garden. Today the zoo houses over 10,000 animals.

Founded in 1954 by the East Germans because Berlin's Zoologischer Garten ended up located in West Berlin.

Over the last years the zoo has become famous for its successful elephant breeding. It is one of few zoos in the central parts of Europe that has muskoxes. An interesting feature of the Tierpark zoo are two separate animal displays on the outside, just before the entrance, that anyone can observe without paying an entrance fee. The European Brown bear exhibit is one of these.
