Debenhams (closed) (Glasgow)

United Kingdom / Scotland / Glasgow / Argyle Street, 65-117

Originally built in the 1930s as Lewis's - which older generations of Glaswegians still call the building. Lewis's was an amazing store - kids of the early 1980s ultimately were the last to experience its famous Santa's Grotto and humongous toy department on the Fifth Floor, not to mention the amazing foodhall on the ground floor with its irresistible chiller cabinets full of cakes, fine cheeses and meats.

Lewis's gutted the building in 1987-1989, closing it for nearly 18 months as it was revamped in conjunction with the building of the St Enoch Centre next door, of which it was to become an integral part. Controversially, a huge atrium was carved into the centre of the structure, wiping out the old foodhall - and the massive costs of the remodeling ultimately bankrupted Lewis's in the process - who were acquired by Debehnams in 1990).

The building operated as a Debenhams through until that company's collapse in 2021, and the building now sits empty. Its fittings were auctioned in January 2024 and it is set to be converted to an office building.
