Laurieston, located in the West Gorbals, was a genteel suburb in the late 18th and early 19th centuries had become a slum by the end of the 19th. The formerly grand tenements had been 'made-down', subdivided into single rooms and the railways had cut swathes through the district. The area was one of the CDA (Comprehensive Development Areas) identified after the second world war and the wholesale demolition of the area began in the 1960's The redevelopment was carried out in two phases; Phase 1A, approved in 1970, consisted of two 24-storey towers (containing 552 flats) at Norfolk Court, while Phase 2B, approved in 1973, consisted of two 24-storey towers (containing 552 flats) at Stirlingfauld Place. In 2007 there are plans once again to redevelop Laurieston as the tower blocks start to crumble. New Laurieston is expected to be built by 2025 with the high flats being demolished to make way for more humanly scaled residences and retail.
