Hamlet where the birds were often seen at a particular pond. Thus, passing train crews working the regular run for the Plant System RR, deemed the location "Racepond." Of note too, some of the same crews were rumored to have been involved in "making up time" between Waycross and Jacksonville and VV, with late running trains. It seems that the term just might have also applied to passenger train "races" by said pond.

  • I was told troops figthing smoll indans would race there horses around the pond thus the name race pond. could this be right.
  • Ther used to be a sign marker on the side of the road in Race Pond. It said is was so named because of a War for Southern Independance camp nearby and the men would race there horses around a pond there.
