Thonotosassa is an unincorporated township and Census-Designated Place in Hillsborough County, in the U.S. state of Florida. With the growth of the nearby city of Tampa, Thonotosassa has become a suburb.

The name Thonotosassa is Seminole-Creek in origin, meaning a source of valuable flint. When Fort Brooke in present day Tampa was founded in 1824, a road was built connecting it and Fort King in Ocala which ran northwest of Lake Thonotosassa. Settlement of the area by homesteaders did not occur till after the Second Seminole War ended in 1842.

In 1893, the Tampa and Thonotosassa Railroad opened a 13-mile line connecting the two communities. This line today no longer extends into Thonotosassa, but its southern portion remains a busy industrial spur, joining with the CSX main line at Neve Wye.

Thonotosassa has a total area of 18 sq mi (46.6 km2), which yielded a population of 6,091 at the 2000 census.
