Kistelek gained town status in 1989. The dynamic development of the town is due to its favorable location: it is just next to the E75 international main road and it is connected to the surrounding settlements be roads extending from the town to the east and to the west. The Szeged-Budapest railway line provides the railroad connections. The small town is located 29 km from Szeged and 58 km from Kecskemét. Infrastructure is well developed compared to the other settlements of the region. There are several significant industrial plants in the town including a cable factory, a cheese plant and a dairy. There are other private enterprises connected to these including a locksmith's workshop and a factory making spare parts for machinery. The dominant form of agriculture is intensive production of fruits and grapes. The town has a high school and a secondary technical school. Tourism is based on the transit traffic of the town and on the natural treasures in the surrounding region. There is a hotel and a camping site in the town.
