Carpathia Responded to Titanic After Collision from this point

Canada / Newfoundland and Labrador / Goulds /
place with historical importance, interesting place, historical layer / disappeared object

On Mid Night of 14-15 April 1912, When Titanic Collided with the Iceberg, Titanic was sending CQD signals as many as possible, Carpathia was the nearest ship and it responded WE ARE COMING FULL SPEED, we are at
41 30' N
49 21' W
and will be there in 4 hours.
Almost 41 nautical miles from Titanic. They weren't the closest ones to the Titanic as it sank. The Californian was only about 10 miles away and could see the lights on the ship but it never responded to the cry for help.

  • Carpathia Responded Titanic CQD from This location.
  • Shame on The Californian!
  • RK77 There was no negligence on the part of the Californian, although had it responded from only 10 miles away many of the 1500 who died could/would have been saved since it would have taken the Californian an hour to reach the Titanic and the ship stayed afloat for 2.5 hours before sinking. In 1912 CQD was the normal distress call over the wireless (SOS had only recently been introduced), but wireless operators were not required to stay on the air 24 hours a day. By the time the Titanic had hit the iceberg the Californian wireless operator had turned in for the evening. Surprisingly in those days wireless was used more for sending personal messages for passengers then it was for navigation or safety. The Titanic disaster would change all that. Furthermore, although the Titanic sent off distress flares that were seen by the Californian it was believed that they were fireworks of some sort (again, things were done differently in 1912). When the Californian did arrive on the scene the next day the Carpathian had already picked up the remaining survivors. No negligence, merely a series of unfortunate mishaps, outdated emergency standards, and bad luck.
  • Thanks wikistevo, your explanation reinforces the idea that the Californian was indeed negligent. Though I did not make the accusation originally, you have actually legitimized it. :-D
  • Today is 100 years.
  • ''Carpathia'' name from Carpathian Mountains in Eastern Europe?
