A town with a population of 2,966 at the 2000 census. The town was established in 1790 as the site of the Pendleton District courthouse and named for Virginian Judge Henry Pendleton. Entire town placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, making it the largest historic district recognized by that body to date. Natives include Floride Calhoun, wife of John C Calhoun, and Samuel Augustus Maverick, Texas politician and source of the modern word "maverick."
