Town with a population of 2,870 at the 2000 census. Originally settled around a post office built here in 1811 and known as New Hope. Name changed to Vernonville (or Vernonsville) in 1854 after local physician J.J. Vernon. Eventually renamed for land speculator Leroy Duncan, who after the Civil War bought a large amount of land in the area. After the Atlanta and Richmond Railroad was built through the town in 1873, Duncan promised land on which to build streets if the town were renamed after him; the town obliged. Town was officially chartered as Duncan in 1881.
