Lyman is a town in Spartanburg County, located along the US-29 corridor, about halfway between the cities of Spartanburg and Greer. The population was 2,659 at the 2000 census. Originally known as Groce Stop, after a general store operated by Augustus Belton Groce. Developed after Pacific Mills bought land from Groce on which to build a textile mill in 1923. Renamed after former Pacific Mills president Arthur T Lyman in 1924, incorporated as a town in 1954.
