Two miles past the Naval Station gate on the right-hand side of the road is Sumay Cemetery that once contained 157 grave markers dating from 1910. Inscriptions are in English, Chamorro, and Spanish. The cemetery's wall was constructed in 1934 and reveals shell damage from U.S. bombers during the weeks prior to the July 1944 invasion. Countless grave markers were destroyed at this time. Official cemetery records have been lost, and it is not certain how many bodies are buried there. The cemetery is kept immaculate by local village leaders, and is a good photo opportunity.
