park, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places

A public park with a fountain in the center in front of the Newberry Library.

Local lore has it that the land for this park was granted to the City of Chicago on the condition that it always be available for free speech events. From the late 19th century the park was well-known as a place to hear radical speakers.

In 1970, this park was the organizing spot for the Chicago's first Pride March, held on the one-year anniversary of of the Stonewall Riots in New York City. It is no longer the site of Chicago's Pride Parade, and is usually used as a quiet community park but still holds an important spot in Chicago's free speech history.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
