It was at this curve in the track that the CTA experienced its worst crash ever. 11 people were killed and 189 injured on February 4, 1977.

A Lake-Dan Ryan train rear-ended a Ravenswood train on the elevated track at Wabash and Lake.
Four train cars fell to the street, crushing pedestrians. Two other cars dangled from the track.

The motorman of the Lake-Dan Ryan train was later charged with ignoring a crash-prevention signal in his cab, but the true cause of this incident remains unknown to this day.
