Begun in 1963 to replace Chicago's older federal building and courthouse. The Dirksen Building on the east side of Dearborn was completed in 1968 and agencies relocated there while the old building was demolished and replaced with the Kluczynski Building and Loop Post Office which opened in 1975. The complex was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
