 neighbourhood, draw only border

DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It got its name from the local artists who began moving into the neighborhood in the 1970s and 80s. A historic neighborhood with Belgian block streets, remnants of freight train rails and iconic 19th century warehouses, Dumbo has an authentic New York feeling. With breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and peaceful park access to the Brooklyn waterfront, Dumbo enjoys a lingering presence of its gritty industrial past blended with the vibrancy of its artists, performance spaces, restaurants, and boutiques.

Dumbo is a neighborhood whose history continues to shape its ever-evolving character. A leading industrial center from the mid 19th to mid 20th centuries, Dumbo was once home to businesses that manufactured everything from tin cans, folding paper boxes, and metal kitchenware to coffee and sugar packaging. Today many of Dumbo's historic industrial buildings have been preserved and converted into spaces for residential and commercial use. As a result Dumbo has become a destination point for countless photographers and filmmakers who come to Dumbo to capture the neighborhood's timeless character for commercials, television shows, and films.

Dumbo exudes creativity. In old warehouses and manufacturing buildings, artists and designers have set up studios. Furniture makers and woodworkers have taken advantage of large loft spaces to create workshops, and the work of Dumbo's creative workforce is constantly on display in the galleries, boutiques, and show spaces that populate nearly every corner of this neighborhood.

In Dumbo you'll find the best of New York. Chocolate shops and fine Italian markets share the streets with imported furniture outlets and internationally renowned music stores. From the famous pizza and fine dining on the Brooklyn waterfront to the restaurants, bars, galleries and performance spaces nestled in the shadows of the Manhattan Bridge, Dumbo is an experience not to be missed.

Known for: Cobbled streets and the ghosts of cardboard manufacturers past mix with “high-tech incubators, all kinds of computer people, and design studios,” says broker William Ross. With a 24-hour organic-grocery store, a bank, quiet streets, access to the A, C, and F lines, and plans for a children’s playground in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Dumbo has become a magnet for families.

Boundaries: Hudson Street to Fulton St.; Prospect Street to John Street/East River.

Subway stops: F to York Street or A, C to High Street
