Brentford is a town which is now absorbed into Greater London. It is located at a river confluence where the River Brent joins the River Thames. Its name means 'Ford (river crossing) on the River Brent' and Julius Caesar crossed the Thames here during his invasion of Britain. It played a prominent role as it was once described as the County Town of Middlesex although it never had a county building. It is mostly a suburban town but with several high rise flats.

  • In case you are wondering, Middlesex (don't laugh) is a county which consisted of what is now most of North, West and Central London. Its name came from 'Middle Saxons', in a similar was to Essex, Sussex and Wessex. It no longer has its own council and does not appear in Atlases (they show council districts - which are less important than the counties themselves). Nearly all of it is part of Greater London, other parts are governed by other County Councils.
