Mount Bwahit (or Buahit, Bachit, Buiheat) is a peak of the Semien Mountains in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Its altitude is estimated at 4430 or 4437 m above sea level, making it the third highest mountain in Ethiopia and the 13th or 14th highest mountain of Africa.
Buhait (Buhayet, Buhayeet,Buhayit,Boohayeet): Is The Summit of Mount Janamora.
Buhait is the northern tip of this gigantic mountain
called Janamora. In fact,Janamora is a combination of
two words: Jan Amora; meaning, "Royal Eagle"... maybe
for its' majestic looks. Its' twin: Ras Dashen lies
to the east, across Meshahe Valley.
Buhait is known for its' freezing cold temps., and
the name itself may have been derived from that
(based on local tales).
Semein Mountains:
The meaning of the word semein is simply north, and
semein mountains mean northern mountains.
The way semein is pronounced varies from region to region; just like New Yorkers accent versus the Southern. As a result, it has been spelled as simien,semien,semein...etc.
Here is the simplest way how to pronounce it:
1) Simply, put the two English words together: SEA and MAIN (SEAMAIN) and this is how it's pronounced in the northern part of the country.
2) As for the Addis Ababa (standard) style: Pronounce se, as se in a word self; then, the last part (men) is pronounced exactly as English word men. Finally, put the two together.
Note, Janamora (the mountain) should not be confused with Janamora the woreda (district)
which includes the mountain, and extends beyond the mountain's range. The outlined
area shows only the boundaries of the mountain range and not the Woreda.
Similarly, Ras Dashen (Beyeda)is also designated as woreda, and once again
the boundaries of the woreda is not limited to Mt. Ras Dashen's territory;
the woreda reaches deep into Meshahe Valley, which is not a mountain.
The outline on Beyeda (Ras Dashen ) shows the mountain, and not the woreda.
