Mehringplatz (Berlin)

Germany / Berlin / Berlin
square, listed building / architectural heritage

Mehringplatz, is a round plaza (or circus) in Berlin. It is named after after Franz Mehring, in 1947. Before 1947 it was known as Belle-Alliance-Platz after an alternative name for the Battle of Waterloo.

The circus was build around 1730 and was completely destroyed in the Second World War. The total destruction gave urban planners and architects a chance for completely new developments. The architect Hans Scharoun won a competition of 1959/1962 (before the construction of the Berlin Wall) for the construction of the Mehringplatz.

As one can see by comparing the photos, in the last one, added by me and taken in July 2010, the statue on top of the middle column of the square is missing. Can anyone give us an explanation? The photo is not faked, you can check on google maps, street view. Perhaps, in the meantime the statue was put back in place. Thanks :)
