Target Gold Mine

South Africa / Free State / Allanridge /
 mine, production, gold mine

Target mine, located in the Free State, consists of a single surface shaft system with a sub-shaft and a decline. Ore is processed at the Target plant situated adjacent to the shaft. Target was acquired in May 2004, when Avgold Limited became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Harmony.

The Target mine was officially opened in May 2002. On the closure of the nearby Lorraine mine in August 1998, the Lorraine 1 and 2 shafts were transferred to Target, and became the Target 1 and 2 shafts. The latter is dormant. With the acquisition of Pamodzi Gold’s Free State assets, the Target 3 shaft (formerly Lorraine 3) has been included in the operational management of Target.

Both mechanised (86%) and conventional (14%) mining are undertaken at Target on the geologically-complex Elsburg and Dreyerskraal reefs. Mining operations extend to a depth of some 2 350 metres. At the end of June 2010, Target (including Target 3) reported mineral reserves of 2.801 million ounces of gold and mineral resources of 12.496 million ounces. In FY10, Target employed 3 078 people – 2 676 employees and 402 contractors.
