island, invisible
Niʻihau Island is located 18 miles from the island of Kauai across the often-times rough Kaulakahi Channel. The oldest of the inhabited Hawaiʻian islands, Niʻihau is also the least changed by modern progress. The Niʻihauans fish and hunt for their main staples of food, with their diet supplemented by supplies brought in by air and sea by the owners of the island. The residents of Niʻihau still hunt with ropes and knives and fish with spears and nets.
Niʻihau ‘The Forbidden Isle’ has only a small population of native Hawaiʻians. The island is reserved for native speakers of the Hawaiʻian language. Although Hawaiʻian language lessons are popular throughout the state, very few people can speak the language fluently. Niʻihau is the one place where people do speak it fluently.
