A main breeding grounds for the endangered Green Sea Turtles that inhabit the area as well as the largest colony of endangered Monk seals. A runway is still in use and maintained on Tern Island. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service continues to maintain a field station there, which is staffed year-round by two permanent employees and a handful of volunteers.
