military, early warning radar
Established in 1956 as part of the DEW (Distant Early Warning) Line, the BAF-3 Site on Brevoort Island began operations as an Auxiliary DEW Line station, primarily handling rearward (relay) communications from other DEW sites to the Air Defense Command.
Selected for continued use as part of the North Warning System in August of 1992, the site was given an upgraded AN/FPS-117 system and now functions as part of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
