Referred to as Gagyuu Mountain (臥牛山) by the Japanese. The Hogback was taken after the American Southern Force defeated 1st Company, 303rd Infantry Battalion, under the command of Captain Hayashi, on 16-17 May 1943. After Massacre Valley and Jarmin Pass were secured, the Southern Force was able to link up with the Northern Force and squeeze Japanese forces into the Chichagof Bay area.
