Shemya Island

Shemya Island is a small island in the Near Islands group, Semichi Islands chain in the Aleutian Islands archipelago. Part of the US State of Alaska, Shemya is home to the US Air Force's Eareckson Air Station, a radar, surveillance, weather observation and aircraft refueling station.

  • The US Army monitored Soviet communications from here as well as ran microbarographs that could pick up nuclear detonations.
  • The US had a couple of spy planes based here back in the 1960's that were tasked with photographing Russian ICBM test warheads on reentry. One of the planes was called Rivet Ball.
