Second World War 1939-1945, military, battlefield
As part of the pre-invasion strikes on Kiska mounted by Allied planners from both sea and air, an extensive naval bombardment carried out by Battleships, Heavy & Light Cruisers and Destroyers of the US Navy beginning in the afternoon of August 15th, 1943.
Focused mainly on Japanese shoreside tents, buildings and facilities centered in this area, the bombardment lasted over two hours before landing craft moved towards the beach and put troops ashore who quickly found the island to be deserted, the Japanese force having left two weeks prior under the cover of foul weather.
