The only remaining synagogue inside the City of Detroit, the Downtown Synagogue has been at this location since 1937 having evolved from the Isaac Agree Society established in 1921 by the Agree, Canvasser, Kaplan, Rosin and Zatkin families. The Griswold building is the third home of the Isaac Agree Memorial Society. Twice in its history, the society has not had a permanent building. In the early 1960s, the congregation purchased its current Griswold location from the former Fyntex department store. The building once thrived with hundreds of members and from visiting Jewish businessmen in the city. As recent as 2007, some 600 worshipers attended High Holiday services, which is open to all.
