Jones Island is a peninsula that forms a shelter for Milwaukee's inner harbor. The southern end of the peninsula was once the outlet for all three of Milwaukee's rivers.

The island was once inhabited by fishermen, but the settlers - primarily immigrants from central Europe - never officially obtained deeds to the land. As such, they were considered squatters by the City of Milwaukee and were evicted in the 1940s when the harbor was redesigned.

Milwaukee's primary sewage treatment facility is located on Jones Island.
