  • The former site of the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro Base Commissary. The commissary was built in the 1970's as part of the construction of the new Marine Exchange/PX. For nearly 25 years the base commissary served all the grocery shopping needs of the Marines, family and civilian personnel stationed at MCAS El Toro. The commissary was closed along with the base in 1999. Community activists organized to reopen the commissary to provide military discounts to local veterans, but no such plan materialized. The MCAS El Toro land was purchased by the housing development Lennar in 2005 to be redeveloped into mixed-use residential and open space. Two years later Lennar slated the commissary for demolition, to be replaced by a educational and commerical land-use development called the "Life Long Learning District".
