After the Navy used the airfield, it became the location of many RC clubs. The field was layed out like an upside-down triangle. The right side was used for RC Aircraft. The top of the left side was model rocketry. The bottom of the left side was for RC cars and the top of the triangle was use for land surfing. Many a weekend was spent there watching all the RC planes and such. It is truly a shame that it is gone. There are a lot of golf courses around and to destroy the one location place for RC fans only to put in yet another golf course was a horrible decision in my opinion.

Well, you know what drove that decision? The almighty dollar! The RC club action may not have even made the property taxes.

I worked in the control tower at Mile Square in 1968 (it was a mobile temporary tower). The helicopters would come from MCAS Santa Ana to practice auto rotations and other completely outrageous stuff that you would think helicopters would never be able to do! I had a lot of fun the short time I was there. Can't believe it was 44 years ago. It served it's purpose at the time.
