cave / caves, mine, production
Bat guano was mined from this cave during the 1920s, as guano is a rich source of important chemicals such as phosphate and nitrate. In 1926, a tunnel was dug under the natural cave entrance in order to facilitate the removal of guano. This upset both the cave environment and the bats, so the tunnel was sealed shut in 1998.
