The Red Forest

Ukraine / Kyyivska / Prypyat /
 forest, radioactive, destroyed, green area

The "Red Forest" was a forest near Chernobyl NPP in Ukraine that has now been cut down due to the disaster. Within days of the accident, all the pine needles died and turned red from the effects of the radiation.

  • The Red Forest was a forest of pine trees that were killed when the radioactive plume passed overhead. As with many areas in the zone it had to be dug up and buried in lined pits. This had to be done because burning would have released radionuclides. In fact forest fires remain one of the Zone's greatest dangers to this day. Last time I was in the Red Forest (2006)the radiation there remained higher than in many other places.
  • ive seen pictures and video of people walking in the red forrest yet i have also read that it is radioactive enough to kill you. are the people inside the woods stupid or does the radiation level vary from day to day?
  • Dear friends, as person who was evacuated from Pripyat in 1986, i'll always thank God that the wind gone all radiation over the forest but not over the Pripyat...
  • There is no Red Forest there any more. I was there 4 days ago and all trees were buried under the layer of soil. Only couple of trees were not buried just to remind about Red Forest. This place is still very radioactive, so walking there is very dangerous.
  • I also heard about this, and evenmore, some scientist think that burying of the trees could cause a big problem with underground water's pollution
  • My advice would be to avoid this place like it's radioactive. Because, well, it is.
  • It so sad that this happened. I would like to see it for myself. Do people visit this place very often? If so how long can you stay in the area before you are at risk?
  • Listen, you are not at danger when you visit. Yes it can kill you, but people wear protective gear going through here!
  • I have heard it said that the Red Forest area is the most contaminated property on the planet, as it soaked up horrendous amounts of Chernobyl's radiation!
  • It's pretty contaminated, but for the Most Contaminated Place on Earth, you'd need to go to Ozersk/Chelyabinsk in the Urals near the Mayak plutonium plant. They dumped between 2 and 3 Chernobyl's worth of high radioactive waste in every body of water nearby; 7 lakes and the Techa River are now so radioactive they make the current state of the Red Forest look survivable by comparison. GDI: "There are many interesting things in Red Wood and nearby woods. Yesterday i saw a photo of abandoned cemetery near of nearby ruined villages, there is a pine tree with unusual seen of fork." You're probably thinking of the infamous Chernobyl Pine, aka "The Chernobyl Hanging Tree". Throughout WWII, both Germans and Russians were hanged in large numbers from that tree because of its unusually horizontal branches. The Russians eventually built a small war cemetery around the tree for the Soviet partisans who were hanged there. The plant was built within eyeshot of the tree, and was torn down along with the rest of the trees in the Red Forest after the accident. I've seen a picture that suggests it's in an abandoned barn slowly rotting.
  • I deleted a picture that already appears in "Burial trenches for trees of the Red Forest", inclullo historical photo [1986].
  • Extrordonary this site i found must information on, I am from Ireland and its nuclear free but i worry about or neighbouring countries that have power plants im the only one that worrys but if anything happens they will thank me.France has lots Spain has 7 Uk has a couple Belgium has 2 so the radiation will come to my clean country.
  • This really helped for my information report. :)
