Established on Sept. 15, 1952, Kulis Air National Guard Base began operations in the spring of 1955 with the arrival of the 144th Fighter-Bomber Squadron of the Alaska Air National Guard from Elmendorf AFB.

Eventually shifting from fighter aircraft to transport aircraft, the 144th and its subsequent 174th Wing continued operations out of Kulis providing until the base was selected for closure under the 2005 BRAC (base realignment and closure) review. With its last aircraft departing Kulis in early 2011 for the nearby Elmendorf AFB, the Alaska Air National Guard decommissioned Kulis ANGB in February 2011.

With its land and buildings returned to the State of Alaska upon its decommissioning, the former Air National Guard Base is presently slated for redevelopment as part of Ted Stevens International Airport.
