historic ruins, factory (trading post)
In 1919, Tom Gordon, a Scottish whaler and trader, established a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post in Barrow for the native Iñupiat traveling along the coast. Gordon and his wife, Mary Agiaq Gordon, moved the post 70 miles west to Barter Island in 1923. The remains of the trading post have since fallen into the sea as a result of erosion. Gordon died in 1938 and the Barter Island post closed soon after.
Iñupiat continued to live in this village until forced by the US Air Force to relocate in 1951 due to the construction of the DEW site once located here.
