St Martin in the Bull Ring Church (Birmingham)

United Kingdom / England / Birmingham / Edgbaston Street
Victorian (architecture), Grade II* Listed (UK), anglican church, 13th century construction

Anglican parish church of Saint Martin was founded 1263. The church was demolished and rebuilt in 1873 by architect J. A. Chatwin.
The church saw a significant increase in people attending its services once the Bull ring had opened. This maybe due to the new cafe being constructed on the side however it is most likely due to the huge attraction the shopping centre now is. The exterior was sandblasted during the shopping centre's construction and some of the bricks were replaced. The church had become darkened due to lack of exterior maintenance. In the 1990s a helicopter flew too low and hit the ornament at the top of the church causing it to become damaged and not work properly. During the church's clean up, it was replaced with an ornament of a golden cockerel which can now be seen above the Selfridges building.
