railway, place with historical importance, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places

GSNHS is located at Promontory (sometimes called Promontory Summit), Utah. The first North American transcontinental railroad was completed here on May 10, 1869 with the joining of two separate railroads: the Central Pacific Railroad (building eastward from Sacramento, California) and the Union Pacific Railroad (building westward from Omaha, Nebraska).

It is interesting to note the remains of two roughly parallel track grades can be found. The track grading crews of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads passed other far ahead of the actual laid track. Rivalry caused them to do dangerous things towards opposing crews. Like blasting rock cuts without warning the nearby team, showering them with rocks. The top bosses finally stopped this.
