Some 2000 years ago a wedding party that was crossing the lake overturned near this island. Everyone in the boat except the bride-to-be survived and a temple was built here in her memory. Locals bring goats and other livestock to this island in the belief that the goddess Kali will sacrifice them and grant them their wishes. During the festival of Makar Sankranti in January, the island hosts tens of thousands of devotees in one of the largest Orissa festivals.

It is really a great place to visit during winters. You can also see dolphins and other migratory birds from places like Siberia.

Theree is another legend about Kalijai. Island was once owned by Raja of Parikud a small estate. Once Raja of Khurdha attacked Parikud. Army of Parikud was small and its Raja did not know how to defend himself. In desparate, he prayed goddess Kalijai and soon a large number of flamingoi birds arrived in the lake. King of Khurdha seeing white and pink plumage of birds thought them to be the army of Parikud in readiness. He got scared and returned back. The island is also known as Flamingo island.
